Questions about woman’s death from fatal fall

On May 27 at 5:15 p.m., Toronto police were called to an apartment building near High Park Avenue and Bloor Street West for a domestic incident, which resulted in the death of a 29-year-old woman. The victim, Regis Korchinski-Paquet fell from the 24th floor and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Korchinski-Paquet’s cousin Donovan Bruce, the responding officers requested that everyone in the unit wait outside. A short while after, Korchinski-Paquet had asked to use the bathroom and the police let her back in. The victim was alone with officers inside the unit when the incident took place. While she was inside Korchinski-Paquet’s family said that they could hear her screaming, “Mama, Mama” from the hallway. Her family and friends describe Korchinski-Paquet as a smiling person who was always positive and could never think about hurting herself. Korchinski-Paquet’s mother says it is not like her to jump off a balcony and believes that she was pushed and said, “The police killed my daughter.”

The events that transpired in the short moments while Korchinski-Paquet was alone with the officers is still unclear, and the special investigations unit is asking anyone with information to come forward. Police Chief Mark Saunders said that police are aware of the allegations made by the family and commented, “My fear is that misinformation, when we don’t have an opportunity to speak, can lead to negative comments. I urge the public to please wait for the facts to come out.”

While the investigation is still ongoing and nothing has been made clear, activists are starting to organize protests to bring justice to Regis Korchinski-Paquet. The case is still open and an investigation is being conducted to determine what truly took place. In a time where police brutality is everywhere in the news, tensions seem to be high amongst the public and those responsible for protecting the public.
