Breaking News: Beirut Explosion Rocks Lebanon
BY: Aaron Anandji
Just this morning, Beirut endured an explosion. The cause is still unknown. And casualty reports continue to pile. Currently, upwards of twenty-five people have been killed, and the casualties number in the thousands. It is truly a tragedy.
Moreover, the timing of the explosion is inopportune. Lebanon is currently reeling from COVID-19. Luckily, the response from Lebanese officials has been prompt, and foreign leaders are also pledging their assistance.
So far, we know little. One of the buildings at the centre of the explosion was known to house a supply of firecrackers. But this might not have been a contributing factor. Local media has reported that the cause was ammonium nitrate stored in port. The blast has been compared to Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the Governor of Beirut, Marwan Abboud. And others have likened the explosion to the apocalypse.
The aftermath of the explosion is abhorrent. Shockwaves were felt from as far as Cyprus. A radius spanning miles around the site of the explosion was leveled from two consecutive shockwaves. Debris was scattered throughout the city, causing destruction as it flew into buildings and people.
The response from both the Government and Foreign Leaders has been swift. Earlier, the Health Minister of Lebanon pledged to pay for all medical-related damages, regardless of where patients were treated. Moreover, both President Macron of France and Prime Minister Johnson of the United Kingdom have offered their support.
Right now, we can only guess the culprits. Some have suggested Hezbollah. But the bottom line is that we do not know who is responsible for this horrendous atrocity.
